Avatar colours and chat members

Two things about how people are shown in LEMA Chat: how your avatar keeps the text colour you chose while staying readable, and why a chat's member list only ever shows real people.

Your avatar's text colour is kept

In the avatar editor (open it from ⚙ Settings, bottom-left), the text layer has a Text color. The colour you choose is the colour that is painted, saved and shown in the swatch. LEMA Chat never swaps it for another colour behind your back, for example white text is not turned black on a light background.

When the contrast is low

If your text colour is too close to the background to meet the WCAG AA contrast ratio (4.5:1, or higher if your workspace sets it), the editor tells you so, for example:

"Low contrast (2.1:1, WCAG AA needs 4.5:1) — we'll add an outline so it stays readable"

Instead of changing your colour, a thin high-contrast outline is drawn around the letters. You keep your colour and the initials stay legible.

If you would rather reach AA without an outline, the same line offers one-click suggestions: a nearby Text colour or a nearby Background colour, each with its ratio. Pick one and the outline goes back to Auto, because it is no longer needed. When the colours pass, the editor shows passes AA.

The outline setting

Under Outline color you can choose:

  • Auto: the outline is drawn only when the contrast is low.
  • Custom: you choose the outline's tone.
  • No outline: you turn it off. If your colour is below AA on that background, an outline is still added so the avatar stays readable. Your colour is never changed.

When the avatar uses an image or an emoji behind the text, the editor cannot measure the contrast exactly, so it adds the outline to be safe.

Chat members are real people

A chat's Members list (in Chat settings) only shows real accounts, each once. You will not see a name with no email next to the same person with their email.

For admins: unlinked entries

Older workspaces can hold group entries that name a person but are not linked to any account. These are not shown as members. Admins see them in a separate Unlinked entries section of the members list, marked "not a real user", with the group they come from. For each one an admin can:

  • Is <email>: say which person it is. The entry is merged into that person's membership. Only people who have that name are offered.
  • Remove: delete the bad or duplicate entry. This never deletes a user.

Both actions are recorded in the audit log.

A name shared by two or more people cannot be added to a group as a name: the person has to be picked as an account, so new unlinked entries are not created.
